Following the 2026 elections, Nepal experienced a major political transition with the rise of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), a reform-oriented and youth-driven political party led by Rabi Lamicchane and PM Balendra Shah. The party secured a parliamentary majority after widespread anti-corruption protests and a generational political shift (Reuters, 2026a; The Guardian, 2026). (reuters.com)

The 2026 election cycle reflected both progress and persistent structural challenges regarding women’s political leadership in Nepal. On one hand, the RSP demonstrated comparatively stronger inclusion of women in proportional representation. The party finalized 57 proportional representation lawmakers, of whom 48 were women, indicating a formal commitment to gender inclusion within constitutional representation requirements (“RSP finalizes 57 PR lawmakers,” 2026). Women candidates also achieved unprecedented electoral success under the RSP banner. Thirteen of the party’s sixteen women candidates won directly elected parliamentary seats, representing a significant improvement in women’s electoral outcomes compared to previous elections (Dahal, 2026). Despite these gains, major gaps remain between women’s representation and actual political power. Although women became more visible in parliament, political decision-making structures continue to be dominated by informal male networks, patronage systems, and male-centered party hierarchies. Public commentary and political analyses increasingly question whether institutional inclusion translates into substantive political authority.

A major contradiction emerged in candidate selection itself. Although the RSP publicly promoted reformist politics, women represented fewer than 10% of its directly elected candidates. Out of 164 candidates fielded under the first-past-the-post system, only sixteen were women (“RSP fields fewer than 10% women candidates,” 2026). (redvoicenepal.com)

This pattern reflected a broader national trend. Political parties across Nepal failed to meet constitutional expectations regarding women’s participation in direct elections. Reports indicated that women constituted only a small proportion of candidates in competitive constituencies, raising concerns that parties still reserve winnable seats primarily for men (“Parties deny women fair share of FPTP candidates,” 2026). Another important gap concerns violence against women in politics. Women politicians and candidates continue to experience online harassment, misogynistic trolling, character assassination, threats, sexualized intimidation, and attacks on morality and family honor. These forms of violence are increasingly amplified through Nepal’s expanding digital political culture.

The RSP’s rise was closely tied to social media mobilization, influencer-style campaigning, and youth-driven online activism (Reuters, 2026b). (reuters.com) As political discourse becomes more personalized and emotionally charged online, women leaders face disproportionate psychological and para-social violence. Existing legal and institutional systems remain poorly equipped to address cyber harassment, coordinated trolling, online disinformation, and gendered political intimidation.

Another significant issue is that youth-led political reform has not automatically dismantled patriarchal political culture. Although the post-2025 political movement challenged corruption and elite dominance, leadership narratives remain heavily centered on charismatic male figures. Women politicians continue to receive scrutiny based on appearance, family life, or perceived morality rather than policy expertise.

Intersectional exclusion also persists. Dalit women, Madhesi women, Indigenous women, Muslim women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and women from economically marginalized backgrounds continue to face compounded barriers to political participation. Although symbolic breakthroughs occurred, such as the nomination of Nepal’s first transgender woman proportional representation candidate by the RSP, broader structural inclusion remains uneven (“Historic First!,” 2026). Public discussions further reveal growing dissatisfaction with tokenistic representation. Online discussions among Nepali users frequently criticize political parties for fulfilling quota requirements without meaningfully investing in women’s leadership development, candidate financing, or long-term political empowerment (“Women constitute 52% of the country,” 2026). Institutionally, Nepal still lacks a comprehensive framework specifically addressing violence against women in politics. There are limited reporting mechanisms, protection systems, digital safety protocols, gender-sensitive election security systems, and long-term monitoring mechanisms for political gender violence.

The current political moment, therefore, reflects a major contradiction within Nepal’s democratic transition. Women’s visibility in politics has increased significantly, especially under the new reform-oriented government. However, patriarchal political culture, informal male power structures, online misogyny, and political intimidation remain deeply embedded within the political system.
